As of 2025, Hurricane Katrina, which hit the U.S. around New Orleans in late August 2005, remained the most expensive insured loss event since 1900, as it incurred insured losses amounting to  107 billion U.S. dollars*.  Third on the list was the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which struck Japan in March 2011, incurring an insured loss of 51 billion U.S. dollars but it remained the costliest natural disaster worldwide by economic loss in history.
