This meant that the average attendance per game surpassed 65,000 , becoming the second highest average since the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Estadio Azteca also known as Estadio Banorte was the biggest stadium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a tournament capacity of 80,824 . Opened in 1966, the iconic venue became the first stadium in history to host matches at three FIFA World Cups (1970, 1986 and 2026). Situated at an altitude of 2,240 metres above sea level, it is one of the world's highest major football stadiums. The stadium hosted the tournament's opening match and recorded the five highest attendances of the competition, filling to capacity for each game.
