A music publisher protects the copyrights of an artist's composition. They are responsible for ensuring that a lyricist or songwriter receives payments associated with the use of their work. Music publishers often belong to larger record companies.
In 2011, there were four "major" record companies in the United States, namely Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI. EMI held *** percent market share of record companies in terms of label ownership at its dismantling in 2012. In comparison, during the same year, Universal held **** percent market share. Universal maintained its market dominance during the first half of 2014 with a market share of **** percent. However, more than the record companies, independent labels had the largest market share since 2011, reaching **** percent in the first half of 2014.
Nevertheless, independent labels do not dominate the record company market in terms of album sales. During the first half of 2013, Universal held the largest market share with **** percent. Sony ranked second with a share of percent, and Warner placed third with a share of percent.
Regarding the highest-paid female musicians in 2014, the three main record companies are well represented. Beyonce, who is signed with Columbia Records, owned by Sony, was ranked the highest-paid woman in music and earned estimated revenues of *** million U.S. dollars between June 2013 and June 2014. Taylor Swift ranked second among the highest-paid female musicians, demonstrating that it is not necessary to belong to one of the major labels to achieve success. Swift joined Big Machine Records, an independent label, in 2006 and under its management, earned ** million U.S. dollars in 2014.
