This statistic illustrates the average rent per square meter of living space in the social rental housing stock in France as of January 1, 2024, by region and in euros. It shows that on this date, the average rent per square meter of living space was 7.38 euros in ÃŽle-de-France.

Rental of social housing (HLM) in France
As of January 1, 2024, Île-de-France was the region with the most rented or offered rental housing in the French rental stock with more than 1.3 million HLM units. It was followed by Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes ( 604,470 ) and Hauts-de-France ( 596,208 ). During the same period, the average rent of social housing varied depending on the financing organization and the region. For example, the average price per square meter of living space for social housing financed by a social use rental loan (PLUS) was 6.86 euros, compared to 6.11 euros for HLM housing financed by an assisted integration rental loan (PLAI).

The French and social and intermediate housing
In 2017, one-third of applicants for social housing were respectively private tenants and HLM tenants. Furthermore, the image that the French have of social and intermediate housing is rather positive: 63 percent of French people in 2019 had a good image of it. Regarding the possibility of becoming the owner of one’s social or intermediate housing, just over half of French tenants were unaware of this possibility.
