This chart shows the share of unfilled positions in middle school and general high school in France at the start of the 2023 school year, by subject. Several regional languages are among the subjects with the greatest shortage of teachers, such as Occitan, Breton, and Basque, but classical literature and German also struggle to recruit.

This represents the share of positions that were not filled following the Capes competitive exam; some positions may be filled by temporary or substitute teachers.
