The balance of payments for the tourism sector in Spain was a clear indication of the severe consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the country's economy. While in 2019 a positive balance of more than 46 billion euros was recorded, in 2020 the difference between tourism income and expenses at the national level did not reach 9 billion. However, from mid-2021 onwards, the situation began to improve, and in July and August of 2023 and 2024, pre-pandemic data were recorded again, even surpassing them during the latter year.
