After steady growth between 2012 and 2022, spending sharply declined in 2020 due to the consequences of the global health crisis. Spending contracted by at least 40 percent (– $ 16.1 billion) between 2019 and 2020, before slightly increasing in 2021 (+ 22 percent) and reaching $ 42 billion in 2022.
