This statistic shows the annual evolution of the number of deaths due to sudden infant death syndrome in Asturias from 2005 to 2017. In 2016, two deaths from this cause were recorded in that autonomous community.
Sudden infant death syndrome is defined as the sudden and unexpected death of a seemingly healthy baby under one year old. Generally, the baby is found dead after being put to sleep, showing no signs of having suffered. Risk factors include exposure of the baby to tobacco smoke, excessively high room temperature, excessive bedding, and improper positioning when laying the infant down, among others. The risk of sudden death is slightly higher in males.
