Unemployment in the world
Following the global financial crisis of 2008, unemployment increased significantly worldwide, especially in 2009. Although it improved considerably in the years following the crisis, unemployment rates have still not returned to their pre-2009 levels for the vast majority of countries. Youth unemployment among those aged 15 to 24 worldwide follows the same trend. Many young people were laid off after 2008, mainly because their skills were interchangeable and easily replaceable, and as a result, youth unemployment increased, even though the situation has slightly improved.
The unemployment rate in different regions of the world remained relatively stagnant from year to year between 2012 and 2013, but it is expected to improve in the long term given current employment trends. Economic improvement worldwide is mainly visible through the growth of real gross domestic product, which has been relatively positive in most countries, except those in the eurozone. Real gross domestic product growth indicates economic growth and higher productivity within each country. However, other indicators of economic health such as inflation signal that economic troubles are not over, as inflation is expected to rise globally, especially in developing countries.
