Far-left terrorism has its roots in Marxist-Leninist ideological movements advocating violence to undermine capitalism and establish a communist or socialist society in the countries concerned. In recent years, however, far-left terrorism has evolved, and it is rather anarchist movements that have focused on rehabilitating direct action, but unlike the anarchists of the early 20th century, they mainly concentrate on symbolic and material attacks. Thus, their practices include vandalism of bank branches or sabotage. More recently, actions against 5G antennas as well as physical or online attacks on large polluting or symbolic companies have been observed.
Italy, for example, was a major site of this type of terrorism during the and , notably linked to the activities of the Brigate rosse group. Other anarchist groups may also have terrorist ambitions with a similar goal of causing the collapse of the current economic, political, and social order.
It can be seen that the number of arrests is decreasing despite the peak in 2017, with only one person arrested in 2021. On the other hand, in Europe, the danger comes more from the far right and jihadists, since many more planned attacks by these political groups were foiled in 2021.
