While companies dedicated to the dairy sector or to the preparation and preservation of fruits and vegetables did not even reach as of January 1, 2024, the most recent studies show a clear dominance of the bakery and pasta industries with nearly * companies involved in this subsector in Spain. Despite this, the bakery market seems to be experiencing a crisis in recent years in the country, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it billed nearly *** million euros less in 2020 than the previous year, reaching the lowest figure since 2011. The year 2021 saw an improvement of almost *** percent, which was confirmed in 2022 and 2023; the year closed with a business volume close to *** billion euros. 

Pastry consumption in Spain

Regarding bread consumption in Spain, it decreased in 2023 in almost all its varieties. The same happened in the case of pastries, cakes, cookies, and cereals, although the decline was milder. After all, confectionery and sweets remain a significant market within the national borders. Notably, the average Spaniard consumed more than **** kilograms of pastries and cakes alone in 2023. 

Bakery spending in Spain

An individual spent around 51.6 euros on bread in Spain, whether fresh or frozen, during 2023. As for sweets, Spain spent most of the money on pastries, with spending exceeding **** euros. It is worth noting, however, that spending on this type of product has fluctuated greatly in recent years, recording its lowest point in 2007 with **** euros per person and reaching its peak in 2024 at nearly ** euros per person.
