This statistic shows the annual evolution of the number of deaths by suicide and self-inflicted injuries in Spain from 2006 to 2022. In that last year, a total of deaths from this cause were recorded in Spain. In the Western world, suicides occur much more frequently among men than among women. Among its main causes are physical and mental illnesses, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism, or substance abuse. Among the most common methods are hanging, poisoning, or the manipulation of firearms.
On the other hand, self-injury, also known as deliberate self-harm or self-aggression, is a practice consisting of the intentional production of wounds on one's own body, commonly carried out without suicidal intentions. Although suicide is not one of the purposes of this practice, there is a relationship between both behaviors, since self-injury is potentially a threat to life.
