This chart shows the duration of maternity leave and paternity leave in the countries of the European Union (EU). The figures represent the sum of mandatory and non-mandatory leave, and the sum of prenatal and postnatal leave. However, any parental leave is not included.

Only in Spain (16 weeks) and Sweden (2 weeks) are maternity and paternity leaves the same length. In the vast majority of EU countries, maternity leave is much longer than paternity leave. In Bulgaria, maternity leave is 58 weeks, which is more than one year and two months, while paternity leave is only two weeks. Ireland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Croatia have similar systems.

In France, maternity leave is four months and paternity leave is one month.
