The Milliman medical index, or the estimated annual healthcare costs for people covered by a typical employer-sponsored health plan, came to 35,119 U.S. dollars in 2025. This is nearly three times the amount estimated in 2005 ( 12,214 U.S. dollars). Broken down by categories, the largest chunk of health spending went towards professional services. Looking at health cost changes, outpatient facility care grew the most, some 286 percent increase compared to 20 years ago.
