Only driving licences issued or converted under the 2nd or 3rd EU Driving Licence Directive are included. "Old licences" of classes 1 to 5 are not included. Licences with a limited validity period are no longer counted after expiration. The revocation of licences due to the holder’s death is generally not reported to the register and is therefore not reflected in the statistics. Due to subsequent notifications, the figures for previous years may be adjusted retrospectively. Further information on the survey methodology can be found in the published by the KBA. Some older figures were taken from the respective publications of previous years.

Citation formats

As of 2025, around ***million men in Germany held a category B driver's license. The number of women with a category B driving license was slightly lower at around **** million. Both numbers have increased compared to the previous year.

The statistics include category B, B96, BE, BF17 and BEF17 car driving licenses. The driving license classes BF17 and BEF17 are the driving license classes B and BE as part of “accompanied driving from 17 years old”.

According to the source, not all driving license holders are registered in the Central Driver's License Register (ZFER), but only those who have held the card driving license issued since January 1, 1999. Driving licenses of drivers who still have a paper license are therefore not included in the statistic.
