In 2023, it was estimated that anemia was the underlying cause of around 5,928 deaths in the United States. Females accounted for around 3,280 of anemia deaths that year. Anemia is a condition in which a person does not have enough healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body, so a lack of these cells can cause symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, and shortness of breath. If left untreated, and it is severe enough, anemia can lead to death as organs do not work properly without enough oxygen.
