A study of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)-associated deaths in the United States revealed that, in 1999, cardiovascular (CV) diseases were the most common underlying causes of mortality among patients with ESKD, accounting for 33 percent of such deaths. However, in 2020, genitourinary mortality was the most common cause of death among ESKD patients, with 45 percent of deaths, followed by CV causes, with a share of 18 percent.
