During the fiscal year of 2022/23, nine days was the median number of days patients remained in hospital when no longer requiring it (stay extended), until home care services were ready. This is among the ten percent of discharges to home care that were extended (the other 90 percent were timely discharged). Having patients occupying hospital beds even though they don't need the level of care offered not only exacerbates crowding of emergency rooms (as the patients cannot be admitted and transferred if hospital beds are taken up), but also comes with a huge cost.
