In 2021, Afghanistan was the main country of nationality for asylum-seekers in Portugal, accounting for 670. India followed at a large distance, with 80 asylum-seekers. By 2022, Afghanistan remained the country of nationality of the highest number of asylum-seekers in Portugal, but with a lower figure, namely 285, while India nationals accounted for a steep increase to 230 asylum-seekers.
