This was one place lower compared to their standing one year prior, their best ranking since the beginning of the 21st century. This followed winning their first African Cup of Nations after beating Egypt on penalties in 2021. On the other hand, The Lions of Teranga ranked lowest in 2009 as the 89th globally.
