In 2025, India consumed over 7.1 million metric tons of butter, an amount that far exceeded consumption numbers in other parts of the world. By contrast, China, only consumed an estimated 275,000 metric tons of butter.

Butter is a popular dairy product in India. In 2024, the country was the largest butter producer worldwide with an estimate of seven million metric tons. It also exported around 28,000 metric tons.

Butter and other dairy products in the EU

Not only is the European Union one of the leading consumers of butter, but it was also the second largest producer of it in 2025. That same year, the region was also responsible for great quantities of cow milk, producing around 149 million metric tons.
