In 2022, Somalia reported the highest number of girls and women who had suffered from female genital mutilation. A majority of women in the country, 98 percent, between the ages of 15 and 49, had been subject to this practice. The second highest rate was in Guinea, with 97 percent of women having gone through the practice.
The World Health Organization defines female genital mutilation as any procedure that involves partial or total removal of the external genitalia and/or injury to the female genital organs for non-therapeutic reasons.
