The majority of the price for one gallon of regular gasoline and diesel fuel in the United States is crude oil. This accounted for a 51 percent share of the price of one gallon of regular gasoline gasoline and a 45 percent share of the price of one gallon of diesel fuel in the U.S. as of April 2023. The price share for taxes for both fuels was the same, accounting for 14 percent of the total price.

As of that month, one gallon of regular gasoline had a retail price of 3.60 U.S. dollars, while one gallon of diesel had a retail price of 4.10 U.S. dollars.
