The source adds the following information: This analysis uses the Census Bureau's official definition of poverty. In determining poverty status, the Census Bureau compares a family's cash income before taxes with poverty thresholds that vary by the size and age of the family. The poverty thresholds in 2020 were 12,413 U.S. dollars for an elderly individual, 15,644 for USD for an elderly couple, and 26,496 for an average family of four. To calculate the anti-poverty effects of Social Security, we determined each households poverty status twice - first excluding and then including the family's SS benefits.

Between 2020 and 2022, **** percent of Mississippi residents aged 65 and over lived below the poverty line while receiving Social Security benefits. Without those benefits, an estimated **** percent of those 65 and over would be living below the poverty line. Across the United States, without Social Security benefits, ** percent of all individuals in the U.S. aged 65 and over would live below the poverty line, but that number is reduced to *** percent with the added help of Social Security.
