The total value of global merger and acquisition (M&A) deals targeting copper resources in 2021 amounted to 6.1 billion U.S. dollars. Of that amount, nearly one-third was attributable to the acquisition of the Spanish copper mining company Minas de Aguas Teñidas by the Australian copper and gold mining company Sandfire Resources for 1.9 billion U.S. dollars.
Lithium had the second-largest total M&A deal value of any critical mineral in the world in 2021, amounting to 4.1 billion U.S. dollars.
