Petroleum reserves are commonly divided into three categories: proved, probable, and possible. Proven reserves refers to the odds of commercial extraction of under 50 percent but higher than 10 percent. Probable reserves refer to the likelihood of extraction of over 50 percent but under 90 percent. Possible reserves refer to the likelihood of extraction at 90 percent or above.
