Content analysis of tweets of 512 American Trends Panel members who use Twitter, shared a valid public handle, and tweeted about news from June 12 to August 31, 2021. Tweets were first coded by human coders for including a reference to news or current events, if they were news-related; they were coded for topic.

Topics most engaged with by U.S. Twitter users 2015-2021
Twitter users in the United States engaged mainly with the topic of entertainment, whether in 2015 or 2021, with nearly ** percent of tweets touching on the subject. A notable difference between the two observed periods can then be found in politics as interest in the topic was considerably higher between June and August 2021. This significant change can be traced to the increasing use of the platform for political communication and activism. Another major change is in the sports category with tweet numbers dropping significantly from 2015, it being the year of the Women's World Cup when the United States won. International news and health also had more tweets in 2021, most likely owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
