In 2019, 2.7 percent of the women who accessed antenatal care services in Ghana had been infected with syphilis. The share slightly decreased from 2.8 percent in the previous year. Considering the period under review, the peak of infections was observed in 2010, when around 3.5 percent of pregnant women in the country tested positive to syphilis. Syphilis can be transmitted by congenital means (from mother to child in utero) or acquired through sex or blood transfusion.
