Software remedy: failure is not clearly caused by a software defect, but a software flash or replacement is identified as the appropriate defect remedy. Software integration: failure that results from software interfacing with other components or systems in a vehicle. Software defect: includes the failure of components related to a
defect in operating software. Integrated electronics components (IECs): encompasses the failure of electrical components due to physical defect, including defects related to water intrusion, wiring failure, etc. (these defects are not caused or fixed by software).

Share of vehicles recalled due to electronic components defects globally 2009-2019
Up until 2017, the most common reason for a vehicle recall due to an electronics components defect was the failure of one or more integrated electronics components. In 2018 and 2019, however, integrated electronics components failures were responsible only for about ** and ** percent of recalls caused by electronic components defects, respectively. In 2018, the most recalls were due to software integration issues and in 2019, the main recall cause became software remedy.
