In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown and restrictions impacted nearly all areas of society. In healthcare this impact was witnessed via a fall in consultations and diagnosis of common conditions due to the focus on COVID-19 and unwillingness to contact health services for 'non-urgent reasons'. The incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnoses in 2020 was over 50 percent lower than in 2019, while atrial fibrillation diagnoses declined by around a quarter from 2020 to 2019.
