In January 2022, the number of South African resident travelers departing from South Africa by air amounted to approximately 81.9 thousand. Of those, a majority of 62.2 thousand, representing 76 percent of the total departures, arrived via OR Tambo airport. Cape Town airport followed as a point of departure, with 17.8 thousand South African travelers. During the period under review, a sharp decline in citizens leaving the country via airport occurred in April 2020. This was due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown which was first introduced in March 2020.
