The purpose for European insurance companies to invest in derivatives diverged significantly between different countries. For example, while ** percent of derivatives held by Spanish insurance companies were intended to match assets and liabilities, this motivation did not factor in investments for insurance companies in other countries. Generally speaking, the most common reasons for investing in derivatives were efficient portfolio management, and macro hedging.
