On March 6, 2022, South Africa administered 84,005 doses of vaccine against the coronavirus (COVID-19). The country started the vaccination campaign on February 17, 2021, with the first 1,130 doses from Johnson & Johnson. The country faced a harsh start in its vaccination program, when one million AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccines were secured in early February. The jabs were later put on hold due to their ineffectiveness towards the more contagious new variant of the Covid-19 virus (also known as B.1.351 or 501Y.V2) that spread in the country.

South Africa has ordered 11 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccines as well as 20 million doses from Pfizer/BioNTech. Moreover, the country has reached an agreement with the United Nations backed COVAX initiative to receive 12 million vaccine doses.
