Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in 2020 the total revenue of the hotel segment in Romania dropped by approximately ** percent, totaling only million US dollars.
Luxury hotel market
In 2019, there were over *** hotels and approximately ***5-star hotels. The market value of luxury hotels peaked in 2019 at around *** million Romanian lei, and subsequently dropped to **** million Romanian lei in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, in 2019, the most profitable hotel companies in Bucharest were the luxury hotel chains Accor Hotels Romania and Ana Hotels, totaling a net profit worth ** and ** million Romanian lei, respectively.
Hotel transaction values
According to a study conducted by Cushman & Wakefield, the total hotel transaction value in 2019 was worth **** million euros. This value was almost times higher than the transaction value recorded in 2018. However, the biggest hotel transaction over the last three years remains that of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bucharest. The deal was closed in December 2017 and amounted to nearly *** million euros.
