Learning assessments by ASER were carried out at home for children from 5 to 16 years of age. Sampling - In each district, 30 villages were sampled, and from each village, 20 households were randomly sampled. In total, 600 households in each rural district were sampled or 3,00,000 households at a national level.

In the past ten years from 2008 to 2018, the share of children in India’s private schools performed better than children in government schools at both reading and math. Children from both school types performed better at reading than at math.
