In the first quarter of 2020, approximately 616 thousand South Africans residing in Gauteng were working in the manufacturing industry, marking a year-on-year change of minus 4 thousand people employed. The states of KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape also revealed high numbers of people employed within the industry, at 324 thousand and 309 thousand, respectively.
