Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, supermarket sales of hand sanitizers in Belgium increased by nearly 500 percent compared to the previous year. To a much lesser extent, sales of toilet paper also increased by 10.5 percent. On the other hand, food products such as pasta and rice also rose in the country. However, these figures were collected prior to the confinement of the Belgian population (18th of March 2020), leaving the possibility of further increase.
