In 2020, for the first time more than 50 percent of total gross expenditures for brand medicines in the United States was retained by other entities than manufacturers. The statistic illustrates the share of total brand medicine expenditures retained by manufacturers and other entities between 2013 and 2020. Other entities than manufacturers include pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), hospitals, insurers and other payers, and pharmacies.
