As of February 2020, the South Korean film Parasite's sales in its home country exceeded 87 billion South Korean won and the cumulative audience amounted to over 10 million. Parasite won the best picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, the first non-English language film to do so, and it is filmed by South Korean director Bong Jun-ho.

South Korea's film industry has grown significantly over the last decade, with theater audiences reaching over 220 million for the first time in 2019, and box office revenue reaching a record 1.19 trillion South Korean won.
