The EU Parliament elections in 2019 were defined by a big change in the Romanian political environment. The Social Democratic Party obtained only 22.5 percent of votes in the EU Parliament, resulting in a 50 percent decrease in
number of seats obtained in the EU Parliament compared with the previous elections. The leading party for the 2019 EU elections was the National Liberal Party with a vote share of 27 percent which brought them 10 seats in the EU Parliament. In 2014, the Social Democratic Party won 16 seats with a voting percentage of 37.6, followed by the National Liberal Party with only 15 percent.
Another notable aspect of the EU Parliament elections in 2019 was the rise of the alliance of the Save Romania Union & Romania Together, with a substantial voting percentage of 22.6, winning them 8 seats. In 2014 Mircea Diaconu also obtained a seat in the EU Parliament as an independent candidate, having reached the minimum amount of votes necessary.
