According to data on waste generation in the European Union (EU) countries, Belgium had the highest textile waste that ended up being incinerated in 2016, with an average of *** kilograms per capita. Among the fifteen EU countries included in this graph, Italy had the highest yearly total textile waste, having generated more than *** thousand metric tonnes of textile waste that year. Textile waste is considered non-hazardous, yet waste produced by textile and fashion industry poses serious environmental concerns. Discarded textiles and clothing can be processed to be reused and recycled. In most other cases, textile waste is sent to landfill or incinerated.
