Certifications are calculated by counting sales and on-demand streams according to U.S. based benchmarks. The thresholds are as follows:
Gold - 500K sales and on-demand streams
Platinum - 1 million sales and on-demand streams
Multi-platinum - 2 million+ sales and on-demand streams

Music publishers with the most certifications U.S. 2019
In September 2019, Universal Music Publishing Group was awarded 122 certifications, 48 of which were multi-platinum. The Gold & Platinum Program was created in 2007 and honors the writers and publishers responsible for the most currently popular music. For a publisher to receive a multi-platinum certification, a title must surpass two million sales and on-demand streams. This sales audit is then sent to the title's respective record company. As one of the Big Three music publishers in the world, Universal Music frequently receives more than 30 multi-platinum certifications following an audit.
