The intensity scale is based on PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS), a seismic scale used and developed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) to measure the intensity of an earthquake. The scale measures the effect of an earthquake on a given area based on its relative effect to people, structures and objects in the surroundings.
As a result of a magnitude *** earthquake that occurred on ** in Davao Oriental, a PEIS intensity level of **** was reported in the areas of Governor Generoso and Mati City in the Philippines. The intensity scale was based on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale, a seismic scale that measures the effect of an earthquake on a given area based on its relative effect to people, structures and objects in the surroundings. An intensity scale of **** corresponds to a strong effect, with earthquake generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors.
