Legalization of cannabis for recreational and medicinal use in Canada and the U.S. has allowed big pharmaceutical companies to capitalize on the industry through cannabis patents and distribution. As of 2019, Novartis had the largest number of patents among all cannabis patent holders in Canada. With over 21 patents for cannabis they were far above even the second ranked company, Pfizer, which had just 14 patents at that time.
