After witnessing a near all-time high revenue growth in 2010, the Slovenian rail freight transport industry only witnessed plateaued growth between 2011-2016, owing to the lack of investments in the necessary infrastructure, higher tariff rates for goods and the increasing user preference towards road freight transport, fuelled by the favorable pricing options and faster delivery logistics. In fact, road freight transport accounts for over 60 percent share of the country’s total inland freight transport, with rail freight accounting for only 35 percent. The sector has also been impacted due to the absence of a high-speed rail network, which has also led to a decline in passenger rail transport over the years.

Government keen on expanding the rail network

At present, the Slovenian rail network comprises 1209 kilometers of track and three main rail freight corridors cross the country’s territory, namely, the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor, the Mediterranean Corridor and the Amber Corridor. The government is keen on expanding the network and has initiated a proposal for the passage of another corridor, which will help facilitate growth in transport volumes across the border.
