In 2006, more than 50 percent of single Americans owned a home and since then, ownership rates have continued to fall. As recent by the U.S. Census Bureau shows, 49.6 percent of female and 46.8 percent male singles owned their own home in 2016 which is illustrated by our infographic. These are the lowest rates since 1995 (female) and 1999 (male).

While homeownership rates have decreased across all types of households (e.g. married couple and families nearly 5 percent) after the burst of the subprime mortgage bubble in the U.S., they have especially done so among singles. Accordingly, rates fell by almost 8 percent for male and even 10 percent for female singles.
